How to Talk to Children About the Loss of a Pet
Share
For many children, losing a pet is their first experience of grief. These gentle ideas can help.
Be honest, but soft
Avoid “went to sleep.” Try: “She died, which means her body stopped working. We loved her very much and will always remember her.”
Let feelings be okay
Encourage drawing, stories, and memory jars. Remind them it’s okay to feel sad, angry, or confused.
Include them in goodbye rituals
Choosing a photo, a spot for an urn, or a keepsake like a paw print can be healing.
Supporting your family
